The hydrogel structure was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results from SEM observation showed a porous structure with smooth surface morphology of the hydrogel. We have systematically optimized the certain variables of hydrogel synthesis (i.e. the crosslinker concentration, poly(vinyl alcohol) content, time and temperature of crosslinking reaction) to achieve a hydrogel with maximum water absorbency. It was concluded that under the optimized conditions, maximum capacity of swelling in distilled water was equal to 231 g/g. The absorbency under load (AUL) of hydrogels was also measured. In addition, swelling ratio in various salt solutions was determined and the hydrogels exhibited salt-sensitivity properties. © 2013 Growing Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, characterization and swelling behavior investigation of gelatin-g-Poly(Acrylic Acid-co-Itaconic Acid)

A novel pH-responsive superabsorbent hydrogel based on gelatin was prepared through crosslinking copolymerization of poly (acrylic acid) and poly (itaconic acid). The copolymerization conditions including monomers, initiator, gelatin and crosslinker concentration, reaction temperature, and neutralization percent were systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with swelling capacity as high ...

Synthesis of pH Sensitive Hydrogels Based on Poly Vinyl Alcohol and Poly Acrylic Acid

In this research, hydrogels based on poly vinyl alcohol and poly acrylic acid blend were prepared which were cross-linked by applied thermal conditions. Afterward, effects of time and heating on water uptake were investigated. The highest water uptake value exhibited by the sample that was heated for 20 min. at 110 ºC was about 2129% after 4 days at equilibrium state. Hydrogels exhibited p...

Simulation of Drug Concentration Changes in Swollen Hydrogels with Different Compounds of Chitosan and Gelatin Based on PVA

Introduction: Mathematical modeling of drug release is one of the ways to improve the rate of drug diffusion and infiltration in swollen hydrogel based systems. Using this method can provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of drug control and its release. Hydrogels are a swollen biomaterial that needs to be controlled for use in drug release. Purpose and methodology: In this study, fiv...

Poly(vinyl alcohol) Rehydratable Photonic Crystal Sensor Materials.

We developed a new photonic crystal hydrogel material based on the biocompatible polymer poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), which can be reversibly dehydrated and rehydrated, without the use of additional fillers, while retaining the diffraction and swelling properties of polymerized crystalline colloidal arrays (PCCA). This chemically modified PVA hydrogel photonic crystal efficiently diffracts light...
